LLANGOLLEN
The first International Musical Eisteddfod was held in Llangollen in 1947 and sixty years on it has become one of the world’s great music festivals.
For one week in July each year, the small Welsh town is descended upon by the world with between 2000 and 5000 competitors and as many as 50,000 visitors eager to witness the dazzling spectacle and experience the magic of Llangollen.
During the day, International musicians and dancers compete in over 20 high quality competitions. Each evening the best and most colourful competitors share the stage in renowned concerts given by professional artists, many of whom started their careers in Llangollen such as Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. Kiri Te Kanawa, Lesley Garrett, Bryn Terfel, Dennis O’Neil, James Galway, and Montserrat Caballe are among the musical stars that have appeared in the final Sunday Evening Gala Concert.
Kiltearn Fiddlers have also appeared at Llangollen on four occassions and in 2007 we were winners at the International Eisteddfod, Llangollen, Wales winning the Celtic Massed Ensemble Music Competition. In this video we are joined by Gael Force, a group of Gaelic singers.
When we returned to compete in Llangollen in 2009 one of the first things that we saw on our way into the town was this banner advertising the Eisteddfod. The two fiddlers featured are previous members of the Kiltearn Fiddlers.
We competed again in Llangollen this year in the Celtic Competitions. We came 2nd in the Celtic Massed Ensemble Music Competition and 1st in the Small Group Celtic Competition.
Throughout the week of the Eisteddfod many of the performers from all over the world are in their traditional costume.
